Barber Zee accepts the trophy for best commercial entry at the Pismo Beach Clam Festival Parade! This was Mike’s Barber Shop’s first year participating in the exciting Pismo Beach parade. With Barber Zee, Jon, Jerry, Tahiti John, and friends and family marching alongside, it was a fun, festive event! Peace, love and friendship was the theme.

Barber Jon and Barber Ray led a fade and flat top clinic at Twig & Arrow Salon in San Luis Obispo this evening. It was quite a gathering as Mike’s 9 barbers were in attendance as well as Twig & Arrow cosmos and stylists and one adorable French Bulldog puppy.

The barbers gathered once again for a parade this morning as the Los Osos Christmas parade kicked off at 10 am. A super-hero theme brought crazy costumes out of the woodwork with animals joining in the fun too. Dogs and even horses could be spotted sporting capes and masks. Barber Jon cut Barber Johnnie's hair on the float while family and friends walked the parade and threw out shirts and koozies.

Mike’s is excited to open doors to the San Luis Obispo community with the new shop located at 1033 Chorro Street, street level to the BarrelHouse Speakeasy. A prohibition era theme brings 1920's antiques and barber chairs for nostalgic fun. Barber Jon and Barber Ray will provide services initially, with the addition of more barbers in the future. The shop will be open late on most days, come see us in SLO!

There was a surprise in store for Mike’s during the 75th anniversary festivities tonight. The City of Morro Bay awarded Mike’s Barber Shop with a certificate of appreciation for 75 years of continual service. The California State Board of Equalization presented an award as well for the milestone and for eco friendly practices!

Mike’s celebrated 75 years of continuous service tonight by hosting a Chamber of Commerce mixer in the Pizza Port courtyard next to the barber shop. It was a great turnout of friends and customers from the community. Mike Dominguez, the original Mike, even made an appearance! A barber shop quartet performed numerous sets and pizza and drinks were abundant for all.

Mike’s barbers hit up the Christmas parade down Higuera Street tonight! 2016 is the first year the shop has participated in the SLO parade, and they reported it was a great time. The anticipated opening of the new Mike’s in SLO prompted the barbers to extend their parade festivities to SLO!

The annual 4th of July parade did not disappoint this year, with spirited floats and tens of thousands of spectators. Mike’s Barber Shop and Tiny Mike’s represented for the third year with the mobile barber shop float and tee shirts thrown out to the crowd by Barber Johnnie. Our youngest supporter, 3-year-old Lily, rode her scooter and helped hand out candy. Mike’s received a 3rd place trophy after the parade! Thanks for another fun 4th of July, Cayucos!

Tiny Mike’s Barber Shop hosted a shave and haircut clinic tonight drawing barbers from Morro Bay, Orcutt and Cayucos. Orcutt’s Beacon Barber Shop was well represented with their entire crew of barbers, including the humorous owner, Barber Winston, as well as the Mike’s and Tiny Mike’s Barber Shop gang. A few lucky customers posed as models and received free haircuts and shaves as they aided in the educational process. It is reported this was the largest gathering of tonsorial talent reported on the central coast (source unconfirmed). All barbers provided valuable insight into new techniques for improving the shave and haircut experience.

Free haircuts kicked off the grand opening celebration this morning at Tiny Mike’s Barber Shop, welcoming anyone who needed a cut before the holidays. Three barbers provided complimentary haircuts until 5:30, when the celebration kicked into high gear with pizza, appetizers, drinks and cake. A fantastic turnout of customers, friends, family, city council and chamber of commerce members filled the shop, accompanied by our full barber crew. Thank you to all who came to celebrate with us, and to all who call our shop their home for a cut and conversation. We are grateful for such a special barber shop family!

A broken water valve outside our North Morro Bay location, Tiny Mike’s Barber Shop, resulted in hundreds of residents going without water this morning. The valve affected a water main that supplies water to North Morro Bay. The barber shop was without water as well, until crews arrived and repaired the valve. KSBY was on the scene and interviewed our very own Barber Johnnie Walker! "These guys are awesome." he explained, referring to the workers. "I came in and they were just killing it, cleaning it up, scooping it up... Super great cats. We were stoked. We have water, so we’re ready." He is now our shop celebrity. No autographs during barbering hours, sorry.

Barber Jon traveled to Europe this month, touring hair salons and barber shops in Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands. A guest spot at Hanky Panky, the World Famous Tattoo Museum landed talented artist Thomas Asher a slick new cut. Barber Jon received a shave while visiting Kubi Coiffeur Herrensalon in Munich, Germany, and experienced their Turkish ear hair removal treatment, involving a flame at the end of scissors singing the hair. It was an educational trip for Barber Jon, and he is now back in the U.S., ready to cut again at Mike’s!

Mike’s five barbers, friends and family of Mike’s Barber Shop and Tiny Mike’s Barber Shop came together today in Cayucos to march in the annual 4th of July parade. Due to neighboring towns canceling their firework shows an exceptionally large crowd was expected, so Mike’s threw out over 500 shirts this year! The event was a blast, thanks to the fun crowd of customers, friends and tourists, and our Mike’s crew, of course!

Mike’s Barber Shop represented as a "green" barber shop yesterday at the third annual Morro Bay Eco Faire, hosted by the Eco Rotary Club of Morro Bay. Food, kids activities and music made for a fun and educational event, all focusing on eco-friendly practices. An e-waste truck collected electronics to benefit the Achievement House, and a silent auction raised funds to go towards Club service projects.

Barber Jon helped spread the eco-friendly spirit of Mike’s Barber Shop to SLO Farmer’s Market goers at the SLO County Air Pollution Control District booth this evening. Barber Jon stressed the importance of conservation, recycling and solar energy, and explained the ways Mike’s Barber Shop is participating in these important activities (see Mike’s Gone Green section for more info). A few lucky market goers received trucker hats and tee shirts!

Barber Jon and Barber Jerry attended ISSE (International Salon and Spa Expo) Long Beach this weekend. The convention hosted educational seminars, competitions, product sales, networking opportunities, and other valuable events for barbering professionals. Jon and Jerry walked away with new cutting edge equipment, knowledge, and rubbed shoulders with some of the most talented barbers in the world. Barber Jon ran into the "Lord of Layrite," Donnie Hawley, of Hawleywood’s Barber Shop in Costa Mesa. If you have noticed the red Vans shoes Barber Jon can always be spotted in, look closer next time and you will see the Hawleywood’s Barber Shop logo. Maribelle from SLOtv interviewed Barber Jon today at the shop. Barber Jon explained the history of Mike’s Barber Shop and described the specialties the shop offers today. In addition, the shop’s green, eco-friendly practices were discussed. Preston, a Mike’s regular from San Luis Obispo was also interviewed for his view of the shop. Barber Jon and Barber Ray traveled to Orcutt today to demonstrate different haircutting styles at Beacon Barber Shop’s November clinic. Barber Jon educated attendants on flat tops, and Barber Ray showcased his talent for designs. The clinic was full of food, drinks, music and attendees, along with the entertaining Barber Winston, Beacon’s owner. See more pictures of this event in our gallery.

A valuable straight razor shave clinic was held tonight at the new Tiny Mike’s location, 2300 Main Street, Suite 2, in Morro Bay. It is hard to find a barber shop that still provides god ol’ fashioned straight razor shaves these days, and Mike’s Barber Shop intends to keep the tradition alive. Barber Winston, owner of Beacon Barber Shop in Orcutt, lead the clinic. It was perhaps the largest gathering of barbers in Morro Bay for quite some time, with 8 in attendance. Barber Jon volunteered himself to education, and had his signature goatee shaved off! You will have to stop by the shop and see it for yourself while it lasts. We hear he is growing it back immediately.

Morro Bay turns 50 this year! Various celebratory events have taken place throughout the year, and this weekend was no exception. The annual Dahlia Daze parade, sponsored by the Morro Bay 50th Anniversary Committee, started at 10:00 am at the City Park on Morro Bay Blvd. The procession turned north at Main Street to cruise by the judges’ booth, where each entry was announced (right in front of the barber shop!) and headed up Harbor Street. The barber shop won a Best in Parade ribbon! Along with the barber shop, there were so may amazing entries in the parade, it was great to see the various groups celebrating our community!

The September edition of Morro Bay Life newspaper is hot off the press, and Mike’s is featured on page 12! Journalist Ruth Ann Angus interviewed Barber Jon for the article, focusing on the efforts he has made to make the shop environmentally friendly. What a great shot of all three barbers! It has been said Mike’s is the bees’ knees since installing a beehive on the roof today. Somewhere between fifty and ninety percent of bee colonies in US beekeeping operations have collapsed from a phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). CCD is causing the collapse of bee colonies all over the world, reducing pollination rates, and causing essential food sources to become more scarce. It has been observed that bees are actually surviving better in urban environments than rural ones. Increasing the number of urban beehives, along with introducing green roofs and urban gardens, will allow food production to begin to increase. With the rooftop beehive, Mike's strives to do our part in creating a more sustainable world, one bee at a time.

Cayucos was especially packed this 4th of July, as people took advantage of the three day weekend and vacationed in the area. Tens of thousands of party goers flocked to Cayucos for the famous parade and festivities. Mike’s Barber Shop participated in the parade for the first time, and it was a success, thanks to our great team of barbers, friends, family and customers. Mike’s shirts and stickers were given away, as well as lighters for the adults and candy for the little ones. The Mike’s team had a great time representing our barber shop and giving away goodies to the excited crowd. You can plan to see us again next year at the Cayucos 4th of July Parade! Downtown Morro Bay streets were blocked off today with squad cars, fences and a film crew. Curious locals strolled the scene, hoping to catch a glimpse of the action. It was quite the production for our little town! The excitement was a Honda CBR commercial, that began filming in the wee hours, and continued throughout the day. Filming continued outside and inside Mike’s Barber Shop, with Barber Jon included in the footage. We are excited to see the end result, and will update as the commercial goes public.

Barber Jon traveled to Long Beach this weekend to gather knowledge and sample new hair products from the International Salon and Spa Expo (ISSE). ISSE is the West Coast’s largest and most influential beauty event open exclusively to licensed beauty professionals. It was an event filled weekend, as barbers from around the world shared their knowledge, skills and tips with others in the industry. Jon comes back to Mike’s with fresh knowledge of new beauty products, services and trends that he can pass on to customers.

Mike’s held a ribbon cutting ceremony today and a hearty reception followed in celebration of the new owner, Barber Jon, the remodeling he recently finished, and to show appreciation for the loyal customers at Mike’s. The party was awesome fun, as Lenny Blue provided rockin’ music, and the food spread left no one hungry. Guests included members of Morro Bay City Council, Mayor Irons, the Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce, the Morro Bay police chief, and all of the customers that frequent the shop.
